The Season’s Best Field Jackets & Barn Coats

With the official start of fall I’m more eager than ever to embrace seasonal layering, and one casual wardrobe essential perfect for the task is the barn jacket. From dog walks, to apple picking, to autumn hikes, to coffee dates, this jacket is a casual do-it-all topper for all of your autumnal outings. Whether you opt for a timeless waxed Barbour or a contemporary cropped version, this style is a staple in any New England girl’s wardrobe.

  • Last year I wore this tattersal barn jacket to death and was so excited when they came out with a longer version this year. I especially like the longer version with this season’s long flared denim, but it’s a fabulous match for your relaxed fit jeans as well. The long barn jacket runs large so I recommend sizing down one or two sizes depending on how you’d like it to fit. (I sized down one size so I can still wear with bulky sweaters.)
  • The classic waxed Barbour definitely deserves a spot in your closet and just gets better and better with age. The big pockets are perfect for carrying dog treats on your morning walks, and I’ve seen a few people monogram the pocket flap which is a great way to ensure you always grab your jacket when out and about. (I just ordered this Barbour sweater to go with my olive Barbour. Love!)
  • Barbour’s specialty coats often catch my eye as well. I have an old one I absolutely love from a collab they did with J.Crew (now sold out) but you can peruse their new season styles here!
  • This rusty red barn coat (more sizes here) has a chic, slightly oversized cut and perfect color for all your autumal activities from leaf peeping to apple picking. It’s going quickly so snap it up if they still have your size!
  • This ivory quilted jacket is super cozy for everything from dog walks to evenings around the campfire, but looks refined due to it’s light hue. I’d style just like they did on the model!
  • I love the look of a quilted paddock jacket with skinny jeans tucked into knee high boots, and this navy quilted version looks like you’re just coming back from the stables.
  • As with many preppy staples, barn jackets are a borrowed from the boys look, so why not shop the men’s section? I love the vintage 80’s vibe of this classic khaki jacket and got my usual size (XS) for the perfect stole-it-from-my-husband fit.
  • Part trench, part barn coat this minimalist silhouette is the perfect take on this staple for the city girl.
  • Swing-y shapes are a fun way to make this classic style more contemporary. I like like the color and cut of this!
  • To get the look for under $60 I love this version from Old Navy!
  • The toggles on this jacket make it something special, and it’s a fabulous price too!

    Hi Stacie,
I couldn’t find the product info on the
handbag or the green plaid scarf.
It’s the third photo down on the right.
    Any info will help.
    Thank you,
    Lisa

I am curious about your persepctive on when something classic and a staple becomes trendy. My positive take is that I get a much larger selection should I want to purchase more than what I already have and the new styles can be excellent. The other part of me shies away from trends almost instinctively and I unconsciously wear less of something when it’s in a trend phase.

Unrelated I would love a blog post about your journey from skinny jean to a more diverse collection of demin style. It took me a while to transition to skinny jeans over a decade ago, and now I’m trying to navigate what works for me outside of a skinny jean
